How do you feel when you're ticking over at 170 (using RPE scale - http://www.brianmac.co.uk/borgscale.htm)?
on that 15 point scale, i'd say 13 - somewhat hard, steady pace.

you can't shouldn't take medical advice from a cycling forum!
true and if i was massively concerned and fearful that something was properly amiss with the ol' ticker, i'd go see the quack - the most likely explanation is that my hrm is not quite on the money and that my heart is not going to explode from my chest any time soon...the resulting thoughts and opinions that i sought have given me what i like to refer to as, 'a bit of reassurance' - it's good to talk - according to the old bt advert

Resting heart rate is a better indicator.

For me. I rarely top 180, (At twice your age!) and I'm a real slow-coach when the road points up.Working flat out, to get out of the rain for instance, (Which has happened a lot recently!) sees me get well over 100bpm.

Their again my resting heart rate, at 15 was 35bmp, and is now, at nearly 62, is under 50bpm, despite the fact I'm overweight.

so it's pretty much a person to person, 'how you're built' thing, it would seem. 35bpm...that's, well that's barely alive isn't it?!

In between here and there
I have the opposite, it takes a mega effort to get my HR up 160 I average 115-125 bpm on a 15 mile commute really pushing it with a reasonable amount of climbing at 18mph RHR 43 48 years old. I look at other peoples HR with envy lol

Probably more reliable than many GPs ^_^
