Yeah it has been fine @cyberknight , I am planning on doing a full service on my bike when it warms up a little  so I will service the headset as well just to keep on top of it, however I doubt it would really need it. There's no roughness/gritty feeling or sounds from the headset.

It was easy enough to do, just be careful if they are loosing bearings that you don't drop/lose any. Any questions then just ask.

I had a go yesterday but could not see how to get to the bearings , it was not ideal conditions tbh outside in the wind with kids running around so i got some spray grease and gave the gap into the bearings a blast around the edge to get something into it .Not ideal i know as its thin stuff but its got to be better than nowt .
Not had chance to test it yet .

I am trying to remember how I did it. I think the bit of metal with the hole in it was just a retaining clip and it spins around. I think I just got a small screwdriver and compressed the clip so it was smaller than the diameter of what held it in place and it popped out.
To reinsert it I just compressed it with my fingers (so the to ends met to make a 'complete' circle) again so it was smaller than the diameter of what held it in place.

Once you get that retaining clip out it straight forward. Hope that helps.

Bringing this back to life as I have a similar issues. Just swapped a rusty cracked fork off the bike with a used carbon/alloy version. All fitted fine but after tightining the bars in place and the top cap I did the brake test and can feel and see movement at the base of the steerer tube.

I am guessing that the bottom bearing is shot but clarification of this would be helpful. Thanks

You tighten the top cap before tightening the pinch bolts on the stem?

Do you have a tapered headset?
