take the headset out tonight and strip, clean and regrease all the bearings. quite easy.

i wager most "replacements" just need a good servicing.

It will be fine. Just fit a new one when you get time. However without actually seeing it is impossible to give a guarantee which I suspect is what you are seeking. No warranty or guaranteed implied or given.

Should be ok IMO, unless it's rattling and has excessive play.

That would of been my advice. as long as there is no for and aft movement from the forks/headset, easily detected by holding the front brake on and rocking the bike, it would be OK to ride on. Service at the first opportunity.

My (albeit limited!) experience is that, as a rule, headset bearings do not catastrophically fail unless they are already so far gone that you can feel a really obvious graunch every time you move the handlebars......so......you will probably be ok for a bit.........(ish) They are 'THRUST BEARINGS' rather than purely rotary bearings so a different dynamic is at work.
But they don't fix themselves once they start to go. Catch it soon enough and a simple strip and regrease may suffice. Otherwise.....it would be a good idea to replace the headset/bearings/races as appropriate.

PS

However

None of the above implies a guarantee of safety etc!!!! :excl:
