As far as a cheap light lighting up the ground in front of the bike...here is an option. Mount the light on a front pannier braze-on. This can be done by removing the braze-on screw, and using it to mount a piece of PVC pipe to the side of the fork. This gives you a low mounting point for a cheap headlamp. The low mounted light with cause objects in your path to cast a long shadow, and show up really well. I've used this method to mount a secondary headlamp to supplement my handlebar mounted light.

i wear an led headlamp £9.99 from tescos,argos or wilkinsons its great run time on 23 AAA about 30hrs so far has white or red led and it pivots so you can point the light nearer the ground. IME i have found drivers give more room when approaching and also dip there headlights
