Get a cheap helmet that you try on and find comfortable. Personally I'd call £90 a very long way from cheap.

All helmets on sale now comply to the same safety standards, so you're paying for styling, lightweight construction and the name. I'd get something a bit cheaper, personally.

There have been many debates on here about helmets and how much protection they give.

I wear a cheap helmet that would give a bit of protection if I toppled over a traffic lights or something like that. No doubts that a £90 helmet will be better aerodynamically compared to a cheaper one, lighter as well.

Beware...................... I assume you are referring to EN 1078

There are different helmet standards and they have different testing methods. Some even allow the manufacturers to produce a batch especially for the test. Others like Snell take helmets off the shop shelves and retest these random selections before certifying.

All helmets sold in the UK pass EN1078 but this is a simplistic and (arguably) inferior test to that used by other countries. The highest standard is still the Snell Foundation.

Many EN1078 helmets would fail ANSI, Snell or other tests. !

If you are serious than look for these marks as opposed to the EN1078.

Snell certified helmets can be bought for as little as £25!

Secondly - you need to try a helmet on before purchase as the fit, comfort and adjustment will all affect its efficiency, and helmets are different shapes - I cannot wear MET for instance as I find them too short, and too wide.

Go for a lid that fits your bonce. Just like saddles, lids are very much an individual preference. The makes differ quite a bit. For instance, I find a Met lid comfortable. The offspring prefers a Bell lid.

Shop around on Ebay and you'll get a Bell Venture or a Giro Indicator for £20 to £25 posted to your door. Try them on at Fralhods to see which one fits best. I have a Venture, Cubester has a (new) Indicator They are so similar to look at you could almost imagine they come out of the same factory.

As with theboytaylor - you can get the Sweep for about £60. I just bought the Bell Volt - cheap at £99....

Both great Helmets. The Volt is a cracker, but it should be at that price......

Just battered my old Pneumo on the road a few weeks back, and I can vouch for the more expensive helmets - they certainly don't fall to bits - looks almost like it did pre impact, other than a few scrapes, but it hit the tarmac rather hard with my head in it.
