I found it hard to choose a helmet.

The most important thing (as said) is that it fits properly and is comfortable. I tried on a lot of lids at the LBS and found that the Giro Savant fitted brilliantly. I then tried the more expensive Giros, but they didn't fit right at all, so the Savant was the winner.

I wouldn't want to be drawn and say buy this or that but I believe you always get what you pay for. A good tip is the manufacturers seem to change the colour schemes every year so you can save a bit by buying "last years" model. By the way I have a Giro which I happy with.

If you really want a helmet (there is no real need for one IMHO, but that's a different debate) then the best helmet is the one that fits the best. Protection wise just about all UK helmets conform to the same European Standard so the levels of protection are not going to differ that much from one to another.

The hardest bit for me was finding a helmet where the strap and locking clip suited me 100%

Some clips are a total faff for whatever reason, some have thinner cutty-in straps, others have straps fitted in such a way that they are uncomfortable.

I couldn't get on with Louis Garneau (spelling?) or Giro.

Ended up with a Bell for about £40. Looks ok in a bike-helmety way ie crap, does up easily and fits my bonce nicely.

I spent ages in 3 shops examining helmet after helmet and for the life of me I could not get the reason for £100 (and more) price variances.

Just go and while away an hour or three of your life and try some on.

I've got a Specialized Align which cost £30. It's made to some Snell standard. I have no idea if it increases my chances of survival, and I don't really care. It's just become a habit and it keeps a thin buff in place if I want to keep my ears warm. Does it make me look like a complete prat? I gave up worrying about that stuff a while back.

EDIT: Actually, that last sentence is a lie. I never wear a helmet when riding in Holland. I don't like school kids openly laughing at me.

Are you sure that you didn't buy it because it makes you look just a teeny weeny bit like a Team Sky rider? Go on, be honest, we're all friends on here.

Lime and get the Vini Fantini kit and you'll be laughing.

I hate how close I've come recently to buying a) a GPS and b) full team sky kit.

It's the wrong colour and much more comfortable than the bell i was wearing before, mine is red and white to match the bike.:becool:

Buy something that's white (police motorcylist style) or a bright colour. It will help you get noticed if nothing else.

I have a Met Forte and a Specialized Align. Both are comfortable and cheap. Planet X regularly have sales on helmets.

Wonder if I can use my Arai motorbike helmet for cycling and save some money. Perhaps not.

I have a Specialized Align too. It's reasonably priced, not too mushroomy looking (just a bit ) , comfortable and stays on my head.

My o/h has a Giro helmet which is too small to fit on my head, even on the largest setting. I'd never noticed my abnormally large head until I started cycling :laugh:.
