Hi being a newbie when it comes to bikes and the enormous choice of different types of head protection out there can anybody help with some ideas of brands, quality , design that would Most suit myself.
Is there any difference between a 100 pound helmet to a forty pound one? Advice and suggestions greatly received
Thanks Babsy.

There's a school of thought says a helmet is a helmet is a helmet.
In a lot of cases it's what you feel fits you well and looks how you like it.

There are the pricier range with carbon inserts to help reduce the chance of the shell shattering on impact.
Some have better ventingf or cooling etc.

Depends on what you want and the type of riding, for instance, an MTB lid is not the done thing on a roadie etc

Read the reviews, see what you want, shop around and go for a fit rest

Safety wise probably not much if any difference. More spend = better finish, materials, lighter. Most important thing is that it fits you properly.

They say best to buy a Snell certified one - Specialized are. I have an Specialized echelon, confy for me, looks daft but then with my hair, they all do, I would look dafter with a hole in my skull

Go try some on, buy the one that fits - as above. Not really something to buy online

Go and try some on, and buy the one that fits you best, the one you dislike the look of the least, and the one that fits your budget the most.

Unless try one in LBS then get it cheaper online 8-0

And you're SHOUTING already! :laugh::laugh:

Sorry a more sensible reply would be to say I have a Specialized echelon too and fits me well, not to sweaty either. But the best advice is try a few different brands and see which suits your noggin.

I wear a helmet, I have just gotten endlessly bored with these style threads, it was the first thing on my list of accessories to go with my bike.

This is why soon there'll be no LBSs

And what a load of tosh about MTB helmet (i.e. one with a visor thing) on a roadbike...wear what you want, suits your needs and what is comfortable

Aw Vickster... was that a bite ;)

Actually, I wear my visored normal (MTB?) helmet when commuting on my roadie as it keeps the rain off my face.
When I'm out on a ride on the roadie, I wear a racing helmet for better venting.

There are purists out here who would NEVER wear anything but a road racing helmet on a roadie.

Each to their own

My advice would be to try on several and buy the best you can afford, these are one of those things you really do not want to find out just how well they work or not work as the case may be IMHO.

Steering well clear of the entire helmet debate.... I would say...its really hard to buy a helmet.

From my frustrating and continued experience, you first need to try on all the ranges to understand those that make a shape of helmet that fits the type of head you have whilst not making you look like a mushroom. For instance, from my shopping I know understand that Specialized, Kask and Giro make wider, rounder fitting lid whilst Mavic, Met and laser seem to be a little thinner for an oval head. Now multiply that by the number of other manufacturers and you see the problem

Which is that, most shops cant afford to stock a wide range of manufacturers and even then cant stock a wide range of sizes. So you'll be visiting a few shops just to find a size of a brand that you might like.
I've been looking for months and months and have narrowed it down to one lid (giro Aeon) that suits me, is my shape and is light enough for me to forget about, now I just need to find it in stock in my size or colour at the same price that I know I can buy the wrong colour..

Basic difference between cheap and expensive lids is weight and vents, neither is important if you are a casual rider.

Oh and welcome, I don't think we've met before.
