Some similar tactics are still used, apparently. Although the system is designed so that if the driver doesn't have to do anything for a set period of time, they have to take their foot off the vigilance device and replace it, to confirm they are still alert.
Some countries use a system where the driver has to balance the foot pedal between two positions to stop this sort of thing.
