I'm frequently amazed when I find one difficult then come on here and see loads of 3s and 4s, then equally, I find one routine and then folk on here are struggling like today.

I think there's two fundamentally different strategies employed:

1) Target letters that could make up a word, but don't actually aim for that word, instead use up as many other remaining letters as possible until you're sure of the word.

2) Aim for the most likely complete word every go.

(1) is what I do; most others seem to do (2)

(1), I think, makes failure less likely.
(2) maximises chances of a quick finish.

Today's word is a good one for (1)

Can I throw in a third strategy, the one I use. I always use the same starter word and depending on what that reveals the same second word. In the first two lines I am looking to find vowels and likely letter combinations. I am interested in what this eliminates but more so in the potential combinations.

My starter word contains 35 possible common letter combinations and the second offers 40 potential combinations. I have no idea how many potential combinations the two added together would offer.

Usually this gives enough detail for a third or fourth line finish, occasionally it offers a two line finish.

If no vowels are revealed there can only be six possible answers.

If no clear pattern or combination results then I go for an elimination word in line three.
