That takes me back a bit. Working with a Belgian on Eurostar commissioning and learning flemmish swear words.

I'm frequently amazed when I find one difficult then come on here and see loads of 3s and 4s, then equally, I find one routine and then folk on here are struggling like today.

I think there's two fundamentally different strategies employed:

1) Target letters that could make up a word, but don't actually aim for that word, instead use up as many other remaining letters as possible until you're sure of the word.

2) Aim for the most likely complete word every go.

(1) is what I do; most others seem to do (2)

(1), I think, makes failure less likely.
(2) maximises chances of a quick finish.

Today's word is a good one for (1)

There is also the fact that we don't actually always all have the same word. We proved that a few pages ago.

6 today, after having the first 4 letters correct at the 4th attempt (and knowing those 4 were correct before I put them in, after attempt 3)

Another example of different words then I think. If you could see several choices after your 5th attempt, then you cannot possibly have the same word I did. If I had known the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th letters, there was only one possibility for the 3rd letter. In fact it wouldn't have been possible for you to put in your 5th attempt, as there is no word that could fit.
