OK. I can ask now. What's the view on yesterday's answer - snafu. I know what it means but surely this is an acronym rather than a word?

I may have learned something. Apparently in modern language we "initialisms," for example YMCA, PTSD and "acronyms" which are words created out of initials, for example scuba, aids. I've never thought of an acronym as a word.

I wonder if we would have questioned "scuba?"

If an initalisation-abbreviation is pronuncable as a word, it is generally accepted as a word.

Well I typed it in because nothing else would fit having eliminated a few letters, I was surprised it was right but then sort of not surprised given Wordle's US dictionary bias.

As said its no different to scuba for us brits.

I was happy enough with it. Well, not all that happy as it took me five goes. But I don't have a problem with its legitimacy

I'd add ''over time'' into your generally accepted bit, if it's commonly used as a stand-alone word. I'm not sure that snafu is commonly used, in the UK at least.

According to my Canada brother, it was only last week that the NYT started using words that weren't in Wardle's original word list. The words may now become less transatlantic and more American English.

Thanks for all the comments on snafu. I feel I've learned something or at least appreciate something I knew but have never given thought.

The above seems the key one to me.

Snafu caught me out, its not a word I'm familiar with and its not used round here, I got it on the last attempt with the aid of a online word list. I got todays Wordle in three but failed on the dordle, I only got the first word.
