Interesting as I only thought of ore into metal and don't consider it obscure. I didn't think about smell at all.

Google says both are correct in both English and American but "smelt" is rare in American.

I've a feeling I would use both but in different circumstances and now you've got me trying to define what those are! 😄

I smelled the smelt. It smelt of fish. Or something like that.

I don't often do this one, but had a go given the comments. the hardest thing is getting out of 5 letter word mode!

We need to avoid a long pronunciation discussion but after a bit of thought I've realised I would say:

I was going to use the eggs but they "smelled" bad - emphasis on "d"

His shoes "smelt" of rotten of rotten eggs - emphasis on "t"

I quite enjoy ones like that. You review the evidence, which sometimes seems so sketchy, and the answer emerges.

It took me a while to notice that wordle2 has a new word every 12 hours. I couldn't understand why my streak kept breaking.

Good spot about the 12 hours thing - I never noticed that. It looks like I may now get above a streak of 1!
