There are a lot of 5 letter words containing letters 2 and 3 in today's puzzle! And the post reply button has mysteriously reappeared.

A purist would always make the same initial guess. I can see you have a lot to learn.
That depends, as you have the knowledge that the target word changes daily, what you may think is optimum for one solution is suboptimum for another.

I can see you should think more before you type:okay:

Actually, he was right.

There are certain words which give you a far better chance than others of getting important information, and purists will pick one of those words and start with it every time.

Ideally (even though there can be duplicated letters), you want 5 different letters with 3 vowels in a 5 letter puzzle. So something like Abode or Abide or Arise or Cause. Even better if the other two letters are common ones such as r, s, t, n, d.

purists will pick one of those words
This is what I mean Alex, there are several good starting words and the same one wont be best in all situations. So whilst Matt was partly right (and arrogant without justification), making the same starting guess every time isn't the best way, and there is both luck and a small amount of skill in which starting guess you choose.

He certainly didn't need the "you have a lot to learn" and I agree that was arrogant without justification.

But I disagree about "making the same starting guess every time isn't the best way". Unless you have some knowledge of the algorithm which picks "random" words, it probably is the best way. While there are several suitable words, there is no way of determining which of those is going to give the best result on any particular occasion, so no reason to switch between them.

I feel it's a bit more than a small amount of skill, where I feel the real skill comes in is interpreting the first line before choosing the second line. I don't think the first line is a guess as there 3-4 words to choose from which good clues can be gleaned for line two. Obviously which of those 3-4 is a guess but one has to have realised what those words are so it isn't a wild guess.

The first three letters today were quickly deduced from the first line.

a) I am.
b) I have put down a word that was a little obscure, only to find in the next row that the answer was a much more commonly used one.
I see what you mean but I don't expect the solution to be an obscure word. I do know though by using an obscure word like euonia one gains a lot of information quickly.

I've since realised there are first words to use which are in common usage and give a better result.
