Have you been able to get some studded tyres?

So im not sure if the marathon would be good for this. The spikers seem to be a little too much. Even though last year I did ride on panaracers firexc pro 2.1s and only fell off once.

I would like to have something in between, but that is not going to happen.

I can't buy both as its too much money and I only have one set of wheels.

A bit late, but if anyone else i the same boat, this one has a bit less aggresive tread the the spikers.

I did find them in stock at one of the german suppliers, but I can't recall now which. I wish I got them instead of Spikers as per my post above.

Ordered one from there last night jig-sore, but can't find any way of tracking the progress of the order. Do they do that, or is it just a case of sit by the door waiting and hoping? I'm tempted to order a second tyre too, not sure if I can really afford to though.

once dispatched i got an e-mail from the shop and an e-mail from the courier with tracking details. they posted mine on 24 hour recorded delivery.

i was only going to get one but then i read a site somewhere that said it was kinda pointless, do you put it on the front to stop the front end sliding from under you or on the rear for traction ????

in the end i went for two. at the end of the day they should last a long time and are the kinda thing you could sell on easy if you didn't need them anymore

I can cope with the rear end sliding a bit I can keep it upright then, but as I found today when the front end goes, I go. It didn't help that even my foot slipped out from under me when I put that down.
I may make puppy dog eyes at my better half though, see if she will allow me to buy a second tyre.

If I had only one I'd go for the front. Might be able to control the rear sliding but if the front goes there isn't much chance of catching it.
(I'd only fit as a pair anyway)

Theres a paragraph on using just 1 tyre about 2/3 the way down on Peter Whites site

Just had an interesting chat with a guy at the UK importers of Nokian tyres - TyreCo.

They only do the car tyres - apparently Nokian (previously known as Nokia) used to do all their tyres in one factorym but they since sold off the bike tyre manufacturing rights to Suomi. Suomi only distribute their products to the scandanavian countries and north America, but I'm going to drop them an email to see if there is any way I could go about getting a pair of A10s - bit concerned the 38mm Schwalbe's are going to be a bit big for my rims and mudguards - although I have 37s on the at the moment so I reckon I'd probably be fine, it's just I'd like something I can carry over to my next bike that may only take 32s. Nokian A10s appear to be the only 32mm 700c studded tyres out there.

The guy at TyreCo is going to contact Nokian themselves and see if he can glean anything. He apparently is quite interested himself as his son was asking him last night about studded tyres for his MTB, so we're going to share our info

Unless there are any other 32mm 700c studded tyres out there?

Just a thumbs up for anyone considering Snow Studs.

Studs - 100 - less than Marathon Winters, but work fine on ice.

They are a good all round tyre, grip on soft loose snow, same with hard and compact snow, and grip on ice. Slow on the road, and handling isn't too bad, a bit worse than a trail tyre would. The tyres are also OK off road (mud/gravel/rocks etc).

Used mine last winter and this winter.

CRC have the 700c Snow Studs back in stock now, £24.99 each which is cheaper than I've seen elsewhere: http://www.chainreac...x?ModelID=48758

Wish I'd waited - I bought elsewhere last week and paid more!

bugger, I'd have saved over a tenner

anyway, first ride on the snow studs today. big difference on the snow and ice, so much so that you have to hold yourself back a bit. remember, its still snow and ice down there. yeah they are slow on clear roads, especially up hill, but thats the price you pay for staying upright. love the noise they make!!!

a good investment for any full time commuter i think :becool:

I have to say that for most of us, we are lucky to get one weeks worth of snow per year. I don't see why everyone is rushing out to buy studded tyres at £50+ per pair. They are certainly not going to be much use once the snow melts. I can understand it more up north and in Scotland where snow is more frequent. Unless snow suddenly becomes a regular feature of the winter months I'll be saving my cash thanks!

Although having said that; due to the high demand right now, lots of shop are going to have supplus stock and be selling these tyres off cheap in June and July next year - might pick some up then.

They're designed for riding on ice, which is common at 630am at this time of year.
[/quote]

well, snow studs are designed for snow and the ice spikers are designed for proper compact snow/thick ice conditions. The marathon winter tyres are the only ones designed for more general winter use.

Current conditions are certainly not typical for November and I'm not convinced that studded tyres would help in typical icy conditions where the ice thickness is less than 1mm thick.
