I have had a motorbike since I was 17, I am 46, I have a vintage Vespa as well. So, with a good appreciation of what it is like on two wheels I thought I was a good car driver.

Started cycling again two years ago and I was shocked at how alert I had to be to get through the traffic without being wiped out by myopic/day dreaming/drunk/aggressive/otherwise engaged/downright idiotic car drivers.

Now I am probably a decent driver.

My driving has influence my cycling

I know how irritating it feels when motorists encounter a slow cyclist.

So, whenever I see no pedestrians around, I cycle on footpath - leaving the roads for motorists.

It's safer as well.

Life long 'serious' cyclist here - instead of 'suped up' cars, I had ordinary ones, with enough bike carrying capacity - chose the speed on the bike.

I'm happy to pootle about these days - no need to lead pedal it in the car, and traffic being so bad, I just am not arsed about driving - it's certainly not 'fun'. My last job involved regular 5 hour drives to sites, not just motorways, but A and B roads from North to South Wales - stunning scenery, but not in winter in the pitch black....

Cycling hasn't changed my driving. I've always cycled and only bought a car for family reasons. As an ex-motocross rider and road motorcyclist I know that cars have all the acceleration and excitement of a tortoise or an old person's electric trolley so I'm happy with a cheap Ford Fiesta and 25 mph urban trundling.
