It took less than two weeks from my first going into a solicitor to coming out with my mother's maiden name. But you should also be aware that you cannot get earlier documents such as qualifications changed.

It was fairly painless when I changed my name to Pauline but the other bit was more painful.

Just wondering if anyone has ever change their name by deed poll, how easy is it to do and how long did the process take?

Thank you

Debz
we got the new deeds for my daughters name change last week. Started on 16th December and did it by post, I guess online would be quicker still. The cost for an adult one is £33 plus £1 each for additional copies - a good investment as everyone official will need to see either the original deed or these formal copies, before they can change their records & anyone or any event in the future requiring your birth certificate will need to see the deed poll certificate too (*)
We got a couple of copies to save us the time delays notifying everyone one at a time and having the potential for the original deed to be lost or damaged somewhere in that series of notifications. Even for our 13 y.o. we need to notify her bank savings account, school records, child benefit people etc. We also paid £15 to have the fully signed formal deed archived so if we do ever lose our one, house burns down etc we have an immediate replacement on hand without any faffing or reapplication needed.

The deed poll people were lovely, they called with a quick query rather than write back so that they could process our application as quickly as possible for us.

100% easy and user friendly process

(*) you won't be able to change your birth certificate, that is an official record correct at the time and remaining as-is in perpetuity so your deed poll is used in conjunction

I changed my surname 6 years ago by deed poll and it was very simple. I used a friend who has known me all my life. Things may have changed (esp the price) since I done mine but I'm sure it only took a few weeks

Just looking at the deed poll website and feeling a little  about it. It cost about £65, need to find someone who is in a position of power who has known me for 10 years or more. A notice is then put in the press. I just want to change my last name.

there are different ones and different sites, that one seems exessive. We went through the official site

Www.deedpoll.org.uk/ServicesAndFees.html gives the types and costs. Adult deed poll £33.

Tel from landline 0800 448 8484. or from a mobile 0333 444 8484 open Mon to Sat 9am to 6pm.

How did you get it for £33? The website here http://hmctsformfinder.justice.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/loc019-eng.pdf says it cost £67.81. I'm confused now.
That's using the courts, not the deed poll service themselves. Follow the link in my prior post. HTH.

That is the enrolled (at the courts of justice) which you do not need for a surname change and it is best not to use if you do not want tracing, the Belfast and London Gazettes are searchable. Basically all you need to do is write out a form saying you are stopping using your old name and will only use your new name and sign it with a witness present.

Just to muddy the waters further a little digging reveals that deedpoll.org.uk is seemingly not any sort of 'official' deed poll service - despite the UK contact details it's a private company registered in Jersey according to their terms and conditions:

http://www.deedpoll.org.uk/Terms.html

"UK Deed Poll Service is the trading name of Deed Poll Services Limited, incorporated in Jersey number 106971. Our registered office address is First Island House, 19/21 Peter Street, St. Helier, Jersey, JE2 4SP. We are registered under the Data Protection Act 1998 number Z9008238."

There is a bit in the FAQ that says you can ring the passport office to confirm their legitimacy which sounds encouraging, however:

Q3: Are your Deed Polls accepted by the UK Identity and Passport Service?A: Yes, our Deed Polls are accepted. In fact, if you call the passport office they will give you our details. If you wish to confirm this, you can telephone the UK Identity & Passport Service's 24 hour Adviceline on 0300 222 0000.

Checking at http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/agencies-public-bodies/ips/ confirms that is the correct phone number BTW.

Maybe just start off by using the name you want to change to, as in User13710's link, and get everything you can sorted out first. Then get official docs if you need them.

I had a think back and realised that although I was living with and using my married name only my passport was still in my previous name. Never caused any problems.
