There is a theory that they bring in more than they cost.

I'm really not convinced by that one, tourists would still come to visit Buckingham palace whether or not there is a royal family living in it, plenty of tourists flock to Versailles despite all of their royals having lost their heads. One could also argue that if we seized the royal family's wealth (£60b for the queen alone, then there's Charle's duchy holdings and all of the rest of it) and put all of those 10s if not 100s of billions into a sovereign wealth fund, we would get a much better return.
