Am I getting the wrong end of the stick here or going mad (it is quite possibly both).

I was the scalpee not the scalper as I did not alter my pace before during of after said scalp but still overtook the cyclist when the road went up.

Yet I find myself defending the bloke who went for my scalp???

I think (I certainly was) that people are just commenting in general about scalping rather than you or your incident particularly.

Hont I knew yours was not by the content. Others had a slightly more personal slant to their musings which may or may not be correct but is how I perceived it.

I agree with your comment that using them as a carrot is good but altering your ride to suit your ego is not but there is an extremely thin line between the two. In my personal case no harm was done if someone believes that I make a good scalp for their notebook or their Bike radar competition then I also take a certain pleasure from that as well.

I love the friendly competition of a bit of scalping while out riding, but in all fairness unless it in a real race/TT/Sportive it counts for nothing. I dont care who passes me. there are lots of people much faster than me and lots of people much slower, its only really fun when the competition is close. There is no glory in scalping someone much slower than me, i dont feel bad if I get scalped by someone much faster.

Don't worry you are not going mad, I think there maybe some people here who are misreading you as scalping them, when in actual fact you weren't. Your post was entirely positive.

amaferanga - I think you had better tone down some of your commentary in future. I don't think its very nice to call someone sad and pathetic, he overtook someone at the same speed that he was originally doing - what is pathetic in that?

Nah.

It's the conscending way folk seem to proclaim their cycling superiority over others by stating the fact that they have 'scalped' someone who most probably cannot be arsed to race in the first place, or/is minding their own business.

That's what really pisses me off and you can't help but think cant to the person who comes flying past you making it known to the person that they have been overtaken, despite that person being out on the road for just under 24 hours and has ridden just under 200 miles.

Lee agreed but it could also be that they are actually just damn good. I was in a club and a young guy was a very good racer. His pootling pace would have made my eyes pop out of my head, my ears bleed and my quads split if I tried to follow him for any more than a few hundred yards. A 24 mph average to him was just that average.

As an old person, I have to be careful overtaking people. Mostly I get overtaken, and on the rare occasions the macho green dragon of envy rouses itself, I can always point out that I'm 30-40 years older than the scalper and should act my age.

If overtaking, I'm still 30-40 years older than them, and the reaction can be weird. I found myself on the same route as a lad on a bouncy mountain bike last year, so said 'nice day' and thought no more. About five minutes later he strained past me with a very peculiar colour to his skin. I stayed behind him for about five miles (which was quite hard as he found the up-slopes difficult) until he fell off sideways gasping for breath. I stopped and gave him a drink, but was seriously thinking of calling 999.

I always slow down now if I'm in danger of catching someone who has overtaken me.

My comment was a general one - not aimed at the OP. But thanks anyway.

Its not the scalping or the being scalped that is a little sad, it is a bit of fun. The sad part is the detail and drama people infuse into a tale about what was essentially an over take. How many sips of your water bottle you took while sitting on their wheel, how you were doing a no hander with a water bottle in one hand and a oat bar in the other, the persons expression or their demeanor as you came past etc. You obviously werent paying attention to the things you should have been giving priority to if you had time to take all of that in, either that or you didnt pass them all that quick in the 1st place

I think we test each other. Some don't give a stuff if I pass them amd some tag on then pass me. It's all part of cycling and I love it

I "scalped" a group of "old boys" a while back, going up a hill, exchanged cheery hello etc... a while later, they all whizzed past me, saying things like "nice day for it" etc... I was laughing, in a good way, at the group decision to show me how it's done.

Mr BP enjoys the chase and as others have said, uses a cyclist in the distance as a target to "catch". This isn't because he is a bad person, but he likes to push himself and having something to aim for focuses his effort. It is all about him, not the other person.

Of course if you enjoy what you do, and you are a naturally competitive person (and I think it may be a more masculine trait, but forgive the assumption!) then you will try to give it your all, particularly if there is a tangible reward at the end - the reward in this case would be the scalp.

Personally I enjoy reading scalping stories, there's no malice, and if there's an element of willy-waving then so be it. I have been scalped far more times than I care to remember, but I enjoyed my one scalp very much (a lady trailing behind her hubby who in turn had one of those baby-buggies attached, 3 for the price of one! The chap was less than thrilled, but I'm sure he got over it!)

Unless it comes to fisticuffs (or a resucitation situation) I say carry on with the scalping - and don't forget to tell us about it!
