You don't say how far they were doing these speeds for, HLaB has it about right though for an average chaingang speed. On Sunday I will be chatting to the fastest amateur guy on a bike [and a lot of pros], in full TT mode he has done 10 miles in 18'07s; 25 in 47' 15s; 50 in 1hr 38'55s and 100 miles in 3hrs 23mins and these were on normal roads and none of them flat, but he is a bit special.

It does put ones own measly ettorts into context when this happens but you have to admire them.

I used to be quite fast, did a 30+mile round trip on the commute except for two days when I added another 10 miles and a few hours MA training. In those days I occasionally overtook a training group of club cyclists, which often annoyed (as I was on a 26" wheel hybridised with hub gears, full 'guards, rack and pannier) and they'd try taking me back .

There was another chap who used to sometimes come alongside in Richmond Park for a chat. After spending a social few minutes he would take off, leaving me for dead :hello:. There's always someone faster and fitter than you!

Must be Hutch with those obscene times...

Hutch has a 17'57. The one that impressed me, well they all do was his recent 30 mile tt in 55'39, which is the same speed my car averages driving around Lincolnshire during the week.

I was feeling quite pleased with myself earlier this evening, doing a steady (and rather breathless, if I'm truly honest) 17mph on the long straight stretch going past the village, when, with a whir of wheels, a bike-shaped blur drew alongside, stopped pedalling long enough to say hello and then vanished off into the distance. And by vanished, I mean it only took a few minutes for him to be far enough ahead to force me to squint to see his blinking rear light.

*sigh*

Well, the pros on the Tour of Britain route in Devon averaged over 27mph, which included 10,000 ft of climbing. Seriously impressive.

I posted about a nice moment for me on a stretch of road here:
https://www.cyclechat.net/
and though this was achieved with no tailwind, it's one of those nice roads with an almost imperceptible slight downward incline (but which seems to add quite a bit of speed). Still feels good though when it happens.

'Tis indeed, Mrs TF has the pleasure, well maybe not quite the right word of being in the same race on Sunday.

Hill Climb Champs? I know a couple of riders in that. Do you reckon Tejvan can beat Hutch, I'm going to stick my neck out and say "yes". Are any Team Sky riders entering?

Are you sure your speedo is callibrated correctly? In every car/van I've ever driven, it reads a few mph faster than the satnav, which is presumably accurate.

Correct. Car speedometers are deliberateley calibrated to read higher than actual. If if recall correctly, something to do with speed cameras & a margin of error in favour of the driver.

Average Speed?

Back in the 1970's/80's I rode as a club ameteur in RR - TT and Crits, I can recall some training rides (which are seriously up and down hill) in a group of 10, club cyclists, we would regularly averge speeds of over 30,MPH on a 40/50, mile training ride! My best 25, TT was just under 59, minutes! I'm now 63, years young and just ride for the pleasure of being able to!

This is the question we are all asking, this year because of the nature of the climb quite a few top "flat" TT'ers have thrown their hat in the ring. Be sure of one thing though, Hutch hasn't entered this to make up the numbers, I think he has the power to do this on a full TT rig. Those that haven't been up to practice on Long Hill are going to be in for a surprise [and not a nice one] if it is windy. Go too hard too early and you will blow.
To the OP, Wilko is a recognised long distance specialist, and while no slouch at the shorter distances Hutch is the man up to and including 100 miles.
