Hi
Got new headset cartridge bearings for the bike, I've undone the top cap screw, loosing the stem bolts and the handle bars won't come off it just move side by side. It wasn't stuck 2 week ago as I took it off then, any ideas anyone?

Thanks
If they're twisting then there's nothing to stop them coming off. You could try putting a screwdriver in the gap in the stem and prising it apart (gently).
Maybe I over tighten previously as the bolt cap is broken see pic, can't get that off. Bit afraid to prising off as I think the outer ring will break as its only plastic.
I'm not sure what I'm looking at. The ring on the top isn't part of the stem. Is it a spacer? Did you have the right size cap? It looks like the cap has been tightened down through the spacer.

Everything above the stem needs to come off. If the cap bolt is out then there's nothing holding it on so I would prise it off. You can replace the broken bits.
That's the cap the came with the bike from Canyon, the hole in the middle is where the head cap screw goes in, if you look at the top of the picture the darker bit there's a crack. Previously when I undo the screw the whole thing comes loose and everything just comes off.

Just had a look at my headset and its crunchy , a trip to the LBS is on order as i know you can bodge it with a block of wood and hammer etc but i would rather let them play with head set and a proper headset press.

Very sensible that man!

One of the few jobs i will let the LBS do, the rest im happy to do .
As I'm still learning what do you suggest works I can do at home and what's best for the LBS? At the moment all I have done is just clean and lube. I have put a new chain on a couple of months ago but nothing else apart trying to change the headset (disaster).

Is it a carbon steerer? If you've overtightened the steerer bung (and the crack may indicate this) you may have made the steerer tube bulge thus making it difficult for the stem to slide off - which it should do easily. Take it to the LBS

It is carbon, have I ruin my steerer? Is it a difficult job for the LBS?
