All bike shops are reporting increased sales due to more people commuting (cost of fuel) and changing lifestyles (more people out riding bikes on a weekend than driving their 2-seater sports cars).

A lot of people like myself are finding out the benifits of cycling.
Wether it be just riding to work,at weekends,or health reasons.

most sensible people bin it, I only stop if the road conditions look dicey or its sheeting down. A lot of people dont have hot showers, drying room or similar so I dont blame them.

Yeah, I've seen a few Facebook updates from mates saying 'first time out on my new bike' etc.

The latest was someone who'll be doing 6-7 miles a day, on an Argos double-bouncer

I rode all last winter - studded tyres + magic shine + canal = ftw

commendable but I have this motto "better to get there than not get there at all"

Ive commuted the last 4 winters but no one would thank me for coming off my bike and breaking something in the weeks of laying snow / ice we had last winter, luckily I have free parking and the choice to take my car when the conditions suit.

I look at it this way

An off Rd commute is much safer than on Rd with cars potentially siding out

Plus with studded tyres youd be shocked just how much grip there is :-)

do you know what, you have just sown a seed. I do actually have a great off road commute to work which i used years ago before I gave my Spesh hardrock to my son. It was ok, 3 miles of trail, a river bank a few side roads and then about 4 miles through a forest..you probably cant see it properly here. Ive got a half built mtb in the shed, perhaps its time to put some fun back into the commute instead of trawling down a bypass twice a day.

There's no way to know how many are second bikes though, so I don't know how much can be extrapolated from the sales figures with regards to bike use or commuting.
