Seriously the sluggishness is probably the marathon pluses. Conti 4 seasons offer almost as much puncture protection for much less weight and better riding experience.
Indeed Marathon pluses are awful draggy things! I'd rather have a slicker lighter tyre and risk the odd puncture

What width tyres currently? My Whyte moves well on 28s. Evans have the Vittoria Rubino pro for £15 a tyre in 28mm

I just bought the Zelos at the sale price. I'm a total novice with nothing to compare it against but impressed so far. Especially at £199

since when did halfords start selling Cinelli's

and the 3 Carrera's @Deadeye mentions are all good value road bikes , having had a couple of them come and go i would say yes to the Zelos but check the hubs have been greased and set up right as all of the ones i have had were not and thats why i got them cheap

A couple of years ago.

The Tiagra is cheap but I don't like it - either get that at £550 and buy a Veloce groupset from merlin (£299) or Athena (£385) which would be pretty awesome if you're handy with a toolset, or take it easy and get the Veloce/Miche at £799 as I did.

How narrow a tyre can I go without changing the wheels? I like using marathon plus tyres too.

why not just keep the bike you have for the 6 miles round trip commute if you are to stay with marathon plus tyres there wont be a lot of difference over 6 miles anyway, use money saved to buy another bike just for fun.

That Cinelli is ace value. But if the OP puts cow horns on it, I will hunt him down and subject him to unspeakable torture.

No me and my housemate bought the 2013 Sirrus at the same time, we both have noticed how slow it was from day one, no different from a cheap mountain bike for speed, he had an old heavier Viking hybrid which was much quicker, my cheap Viking hybrid was similar in speed and comfort to my 2013 Sirrus. The marathon pluses are recent additions. I will look into the conti 4 seasons though

I just ride to get to places. I am fed up of being overtaken by old ladies, or fat people of crap mountain bikes.

Could the engine be misfiring? The bike makes very little difference at certain levels.

We'll swap bikes and I will race ya.

Agreed. If you like the bike, OP, consider lighter tyres, possibly on a nice set of wheels, and stick those on when you want a bit of speed.
