They eventually trusted me to assemble the bike in the store. Ironically, when I set off on my new steed it turned out to have a stiff link in the chain. Thankfully, that freed off after about 100 miles, because I certainly wasn't looking forward to making a guarantee claim. ('You must have damaged it, sir,' etc, etc!)

You can most times free a stiff link firstly by finding the link and then moving the link left and right a few times. This normally loosens it off.

Yep, that's what I did, but from what I remember it still took plenty of 'running in' to free off. In the past I've had chains that developed stiff links and no amount of pin pushing and manipulation made any difference. I reckon you get batches of bad ones.
