Half of a key inside U Lock

Quite often bikes get abandoned, locked to things. Eventually they must get removed, presumably by the Local Authority. ergo, the LA must have someone who does it, perhaps a contractor. Would it be worth having a word with the LA? They might be able to help!

Depends on how good the lock is. I cut a cheap D lock off surprisingly easily with bolt croppers (don't worry it was wife's bike)

Don't leave it a week and make everyone wait while updating on the state of your abandoned bike. On a serious note tell the law and rent borrow blag a 24v battery grinder and set too if that fails borrow a friends hydraulic jack never fails

Ask the local fire station if they can help, they might, for a reasonable fee.

You also want a hard hat, safety boots and a reflective jacket. This will make you look like an official type person. It's amazing what you can get away with if you have the right look.

You only need all that if you're "unlocking" someone else's bike; this is the OP's own bike !

Put a bottle jack between the u lock and jack away.... it will open your U-Lock

U-locks are rubbish and so easy to open using this method as they are not designed to deal with the stress doing this induces to the lock.
The technique is widely documented over the web and you can even purchase jacks which have been modified with clamps which are bolted over the bar of the lock to prevent the jack slipping

Won't the lock open by pushing the stub into the keyhole?

If it's broken flush with the barrel faceplate then it should turn if you can get some purchase on it, maybe with a screwdriver.

Consult the police beforehand.
Even if you've the proof of ownership with you at the time, it may take quite a few hours explaining/checking up if you get collared mid-cut.

If you have another key, how about removing the broken part of the key with piano wire.
Where are the daily updates on how the bike is dong, locked up & feeling abanded by its owner.

Another avenue the OP could explore is inviting the help of the armed services. A controlled explosion should do the trick. Collateral damage might leave the OP's bike needing a service.
