I have no idea where this myth comes from but its not true imho.
Lasts years Dura-Ace was 10 speed this years Ultegra is 11 Speed when you read the technical documentation the spring loading on the mechs are not the same and many other things do not suggest anything of the sort.
A similar thing was definitely true when I bought 10-speed Chorus for my Cannondale about 10 years ago. The Record groupset from the year before was rebadged as Chorus when they upgraded Record.

I was about to post a similar question regarding the sora and tiagra groupset. my buget is a bit smaller than op (around £700- 800, looking at 2013 models) and i was wondering if its worth paying the extra £150 -200 for the upgraded groupset when the rest of the bike is the same. the bike i have at the minute has shimano 2300 thats been ok but i would like to have a more positive, quicker gear change that doesnt go out of adjudstment every few rides. Would tiagra be a significant upgrade for me?

I have a bike with sora, and another with 105.The sora is 9 speed triple and the 105 is a 10 speed double. But the sora is my "best" bike and the 105 my winter/when it rains bike. There really isn't that much difference if both set up correctly, but maybe that's just me.I did upgrade the sora shifters to do away with the thumb shift. Now there fine,as good for me as 105

I'd wait for the new 11 speed 105 available soon.

You don't need 11 speed:whistle: Just like all my club mates told me when I got 8 speed as it was released !!!

You don't need any speed as I have been discovering after riding gears for a few days:smile:.
Seriously though, what I dislike about all the modern groupsets is this insistence of having a massive jump between outer and inner chain rings. I have a new Ultegra on my geared bike and it is a 53 / 39, how I long for a
52 /42 or 52 / 40, even with a 12 x 25 on the back I was finding it difficult to select a comfortable gear. My old
52 / 42 / 32 triple was much friendlier and only ever used the granny in Cornwall.

I feel the same way. I have 53/39 on my Cannondale and find it overgeared and the jump between the rings too big. It is why I don't want to switch to compact to get the lower gears that I am looking for. I am going to put a triple on instead and might go for 50/39/30 rings.

I've gone from 9 speed Tiagra to 10 speed ( I think 105)

I don't notice any difference on the rear but it's smoother on the front. Infact I'll have to check how many gears my new 105 is ! Tiagra did have the indicator and a comforting click so you knew you had changed gear ! Hopefully when my new 105 breaks in a bit it'll be 2nd nature.

I'd be de-friending you if you said you had a compact !!
