If the bike is going to be just a hack buy some inner cables and replace them if the outers are serviceable. Try and do as many jobs as you can yourself and use youtube and parktools guides.

Cheap set of cables that are ok here : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230885806490?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 , as long as you lube them they will do the job, but here are better ones if you plan to keep the bike and use it regularly. You need a decent set of wire cutters, some allen keys and a phillips screwdriver to change any cable.

thanks every one, update it been sorted out for now, needed new cables. so it chaging gears ok, it jumps sometimes, no idea why. But is it rideable for now, till i save up to get a better bike.

@Kins thanks for the link saved it as favs, so i can use that next time and to pass it on to family and friends.

@RecordAceFromNew yeah it sort of my progect bike at the moment and learning how to deal with and how to fix things and learn about bikes aswell Just need something to get me around till i get a better-ish bike. Thanks.


p.s i want to get some mudgards, but is there a type i have to get? Seen the one i like but worryed that the front breaks might be in the way?

Basic MTB mudguards should do you fine on that. My son has a set from Decathlon (who also do replacement grip-shift mechanisms for under £10)...
