Not sure if this is the right place to post.

I have picked up a bike today it was free. The owner said the bike is good but may need a few tweaking and fixing.

Right i have came across to my gripshift/gears on the bar on Concept Hustler. The one on the left is ok apart from one change which is hard and stiff, it has 3 gears on that side. The one on right has 7 gears and i cant turn to go any lower then 4th/3rd. I tried looking online to see if i can fix it or sort it out, but im a newbie to all this and willing to learn and try and keep the cost down as possable too. So i am a little lost and not sure if i was looking for the right thing.

And help/tips/sites/videos would be great thanks.

Sounds like it needs a new cable fitting. They are a bit fiddly to do if you are not familiar with them. What make of grip shift is it? If you are not sure leave it to your LBS - it should only cost about £10 to sort.

Thanks for your replay, i had a quick look online. And it says "Shimano 21 speed gears with gripshifts" hope that helps unless it the wrong thing im looking for?

Look on the actual shifter to see what make it is - maybe Shimano Maybe SRAM. They all have a different way of putting a new cable in so need to know before you start.

There can be various reasons so need to eliminate one by one. First off it can be an issue at the rear derailleur, to eliminate that possibility loosen the cable at the rear derailleur and see whether the shifter can turn or not. If not then loosen the cable at the shifter to eliminate cabling issue. If after that still won't turn then it is the shifter.

If shifter would turn after one of the above steps then it is either the derailleur (which likely just needs adjustment and at worst replacement), or cabling (which costs peanuts to renew). If unsure do come back.

Thanks for the video, it was a little lose on both, tighten it up, it a little better. But i cant be 100% sure until i ride it, as i don't have anything to hold my bike up, and don't want to put my bike upside down. i will update tomorrow,.

P.s i have noticed some cable is worn so it will need replacing, so i probably get the gear-change with the cable, do i have to get the same gear-change or can i get a different one?

My tip would be ....

Book it in for a service at your local bike shop, go to a workshop such as those offered by Edinburgh Bike Coop in Leeds or buy a book eg Zinn and the Art of Road Bike maintenance.

The bike didn't cost you anything so now it is time to shell out on some dedicated help.

I don't know how much a LBS would charge, if they are prepared to accept the job, for service of seemingly a full susser £119 when new... I suspect the cost might not be far from that figure or even exceed it for a proper job given the bike has been neglected. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the bike is a lost cause, it just sounds more like an excellent opportunity for the OP to learn how to maintain a bike at minimum cost while saving his money for something better.

For instructions Park's free guides are excellent. Unless the Microshift gripshifters are damaged or proven to be faulty I would leave them. If and when you want to replace them any Shimano or Microshift flat bar 7x3 speed shifters or integrated shifter/brake levers would do. Personally I think Shimano's trigger shifters (sometimes referred to as EZ fire) are nicer to use and the ratchet mechanism better and more precise than all cheap gripshifters. With or without brake levers they are around £20 a pair.
