There's good stuff around nowadays as well, Alecs, Part of the problem is you get to hear less of it the older you get, as you naturally don't have access to the same channels of information. There was a load of crap around in the 60s/70s/80s as well as the good stuff, but I agree, I tend to have a selective memory too. That's life.

i agree to a point unc, although i have mtv2 (which is the best music channel for alternative music) and there's a been a definate decline in standards of new stuff in the ten years i've had the channel.

it's all so recycled, the courteeners (who are great live) sound like a mix of the wedding present and the chesterfields, the kings of leon are almost fugazi clones on some tracks, and so it goes.

even the best singers just want to be clones of mariah carey. if a band of the ilk of take that can make a comeback as serious musicians it's a sign that there is just not enough decent music to pass as a decent alternative.

while the main focus is on celebrity rather than music, i can't say i expect things to improve until the inevitable teen backlash against celebrity culture.

I agree, plus you have less time/inclination to read NME, trawl through the singles section/bargain bin of record shops (actually is that possible now?), go to clubs that play good new stuff, hang round with mates playing music, go to gigs (and actually watching the support act).

However I firmly believe that 1989-1993 was the finest time EVER for music!

I don't agree. It's still there and it's only yourself to blame if you don't hear it. In my opinion, older people don't hear new music because they don't want to. The radio still plays it, the shops still sell it. My fourteen-year-old son is a big Kasabian fan but I bet he doesn't tell his mates that it was his big fat dad who put him on to them years ago ;0)

SoulIISoul's "Back to Life" was apretty groundbreaking song when it came out, it certainly spawned a whole lot of imitators. I'd describe it as a Classic.

I would agree 100%. 1989 IIRC, I was at Uni and was doing a really easy course which allowed me to bugger off and do what I wanted - so I went to work on a adventure holiday camp. And this was one of the songs of the summer. That and 'Kylie - put you hand on your heart"

Frank Turner is the one for me at the moment.

Well now, Elvis, Chic, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Clash, Heatwave, Joe Jackson, SPringsteen, The Special AKA, Liquid Gold, The Beat, Tavares, Abba, The Ruts, Iron Maiden, Boney M...

The Gang of Four, Talking Heads...

Need I go on?
