Do you ever listen to old charts and think that there was a real classic record (Say River Deep Mountian High) in the chart amongs a load of ordinary pop fodder but at the time we did not see it.

I think we are in the presence of greatness in the chart at the moment (sorry if it is called something trendier these days)

Beyonce has "If I were a Boy" in the chart being outsold by all sorts of crud (x factor).

I flag it up as an all time classic

Anyone got any recent classics to propose?
Or hit us with some old stuff outsold by crap.

I can think of a few which broke new ground when they came out, and we didn`t realise their importance `til later. Bob Dylan`s Subterranean Homesick Blues, was broadcast with what many regard as one of the first music videos....instead of a live or recorded performance (else Pan`s People jiggling about) Spawned a whole new way of selling recorded music.

Dire Straits CD "Brothers in Arms" really got the CD format going too.

Any others?

Did you see this superb palindromic parody that someone posted on an earlier thread?

As to the OP, the thing that amazes me is when I see a top 10 from sort of Waterloo Sunset/Brown Sugar sort of era, and forty years on I can not only recognise but actually sing probably nine out of the ten songs - and that from just 'an average week'. If I ever see a top ten these days I might recognise two of the artistes' names ('Beyonce...rings a bell'), but probably none of the songs.

Every now and again a really well written tune gets well performed by a 'pop artist' that most people just write off as a karaoke singer - some of Will Young's stuff springs to mind as real quality music that we don't realise yet. This is coming from a 29 year old hardcore/metal fan into the most obscure bands imaginable!

When I hear The Cure's stuff from the 80s I always think they don't make songs like they used to...

i think the '80s was the best decade for alternative music. there was a lot of crossover in the '90s, and since then the music industry has slid into the mire of going for "safe bets" i.e. the under 16 female market - a solution they cling to all the longer given the uncertainty over how to tackle the digital music revolution.

Yes definitely - I agree with you wholeheartedly. The 80s was before the practice of market segmentation really took hold, and before the whole thing became closely 'managed' and therefore made completely sterile.

Oh come on you guys, you aren't trying to tell me that The Cure were better than Leona Lewis or Girls Aloud are you?

Of course I agree, but there's something annoyingly 'grumpy old men' (or lady)about putting down current music as not as good as that from your own era. Except that its definitely true in this case.

Nice clip by the way Dave5N

i used to think it was just me getting old, but i have met bright young things in their 20s who prefer music the music of my youth over theirs.

most decent bands these days are just soundalikes of '70s/'80s/'90s acts too.
