You can upload a route to motionx and then you can follow it.

Other apps such as mapmyride and strava are ride loggers

MapMyRide allows you to plan routes using a pretty decent map GUI and lets' you produce a cue sheet. Apparently the "premium" version of the App also does turn by turn navigation but I've not used it.

It's improved since I last had it then! I'll check it out

Sorry, the Website allows you to plan routes with a nice map gui etc, the mobile app doesn't, it just loads previously planned routes I think.
I use the website to plan and produce cues, then use the app to record my route (without turn by turn navigation)

sorry for being a bit dumb but is GPS the same as SAT NAV? I want something to tell me where to go, not where I have been? Can Strava / Osmand / MapMyRide ect... do this?
GPS is the system of satellites that allows a device (phone, sat-nav etc.) to know where it is on the globe.

A Sat-Nav (either a phone app or standalone device) can use a GPS signal with a map to guide you to a destination.

The US government own and run the GPS satellites, TomTom make car Sat-Navs.

With navigation you have 2 main flavours. “Turn by Turn” like a car Sat-Navs, or rolling map (following a line on a map, your position always in the centre). On a bike I pre-plot me route taking in back lanes so prefer the rolling map (I use MotionX). If I need to just get somewhere I use “Turn by Turn” (I use the TomTom app in cycle mode, that way I don’t end up on a motorway like M25 man).

If you combine GPS with time then you can do speed and distance and also track/record where you have been.

Some apps do everything, some just some of the above. MotionX will navigate (not turn by turn), track my ride and work as a cycle computer. TomTom will just do navigation and speed. Strava will just track and cycle computer stuff.

It sounds like you’re asking for a turn by turn Sat-Nav app.

TomTom is very good but expensive. The plus is you can also use it as car sat-nav.

I've tried many an app that's free and i now stick to Google maps cycle mode for navigation and strava just to plot and see where I've been. Not seen a few of the above apps so will have a nosey!

Another thing to consider is where and how the map information is getting to your phone.

A lot of apps download the map tiles over the air (3G) as and when you need each new tile. This could be a legal reason (Google don’t let just anyone store their maps in Apps). It could be storage as maps take up a huge amount of space.

This has some major drawbacks. You need a data single. It can take a long time to download a tile if you have
poor data reception. It is using phone data.

Some apps allow you to pre download the maps in advance (e.g. at home over wifi). MotionX allow you to preload “opencyclemaps” tiles.

Some apps come with the maps installed as part of the app. TomTom comes with the maps of the version you buy. So to use TomTom all I need is GPS reception, I do not need data. TomTom is expensive but a lot of that cost is paying for the maps, in the same way buying OS maps are expensive.

You can still pre cache maps with Google. Its not ideal but you can download the area you want

I was really disappointed to find out that strava didn't have the option to follow a previously mapped route on the mobile app. I don't really need turn by turn, but being able to load up a map is really important to me as I ride a lot of new routes in and around London which have lots of turns which are easy to miss otherwise. For the moment I'm still tracking and analysing with strava but also running map my ride during my rides so I can follow pre-created routes. Bit of a faff, but it's been working fine so far.
