Etrex 20 and the Etrex Legend before it. For rides of any real distance, I think you need a unit that can take normal batteries and the 20 takes standard AA.

Right now that particular can of worms is opened.........

I've an Etrex, cracking piece of kit..
In an Amazon lightning deal the other day, the 30 was £120:ohmy:

I use Talkytoasters Look n Feel maps on it....
Edit to add..

Etrex Vista HCx for. Probably doesn't have the street cred of the cycling specific models, but does everything i need it to.

To be honest I usually ride without a GPS unless I'm going somewhere completely new. I found myself becoming a slave to it and missing out on the joy of a good bike ride.

That's usually how I ride and think. Was thinking of one for distance, speed, elevation etc. To log progress and improvement really

So having said that I probably better off with a good cycle computer ??

Motorola Moto E. It's cheap and ace. I currently run both Osmand for mapping and routes and Endomondo for calorie type numbers.
I'm guessing it has range issues though.

Garmin touring - if you want maps and don't want/need all the heart rate/cadence training guff..
Garmin 200 if you just want to record a ride and have a breadcrumb trail.

Etrex 20 + open street map.

Best bang for buck out there

I'm not sure what you mean by "range" but Osmand has offline maps, so you can put your phone in airplane mode, and it will work fine.
I'm referring to battery life while functioning as a turn by turn GPS unit. I'm guessing around 12 - 14 hours depending on how long the screen is lit for

I've run it for 18 hours and it still had 20-odd percent battery left, at which point I recharged it from a 15 quid recharge battery thing.

So yes, it has a limited range just like any GPS does.
