Is there anyone on here from South Wales, or anyone that is taking part in the Gower Bike Ride next year?

I am thinking of taking part in it, how hard is it and how much training should i need to do before hand.. I am wanting to complete the 50 mile course.

not done the ride but looking at the ride profile, with any half decent level of fitness youll find it easy enough http://www.bikemap.net/route/236518#lat=51.614728801039&lng=-4.05419&zoom=12&maptype=ts_terrain

thats the 27 mile one, prob wont be similar for the 50 regarding hills

Difficult to suggest how much riding you should be doing, without knowing how much you are already doing...??

Hello. I don't do the BHF Ride itself, but I ride the same routes often. As B&Y said, would need to know where you are now before offering particular advice, but I'd say it was eminently achievable. Come and ride with Swansea CTC in the meantime!

being a complete noobie to 50miles should be easily achievable in the time if you put the effort in. the fact that you've done a 10k run means you should be fit just add miles every week and take it easy, i went from not cycling to doing a 30 mile ride in 4 weeks and i weighed 16.5 stone, and then added 10 miles every 2 weeks. 6 months in i did a 100 mile ride

best way is to get out with a cycle club. riding ina group sucks you along in the wind and means you do more miles and helps you get over the psychological aspect of doing longer rides

Well I have a step brother and his girlfriend to ride with once a week. He is in rehab after a very serious car crash and is wobbly when walking but doesn't wobble when riding his bike. Seems more MTB orientated up this end of the valley and although I have looked can't find any sort of club outside Swansea which is to far.

I have been ill since the 10k run so bikes is a way for me to get back some sort of fitness. I can walk 5-10 miles with little problem with the dogs in the hills but it doesn't use the same muscles to the same extent. At the moment my knees feel it the most, and when I go to bed my stomach muscles. Early days yet but I am enjoying every minute, far more pleasure than running thats for sure!

if your knees hurt, consider a bike fit. alot of knee pain is caused by incorrect saddle height, just a few centermetres wrong can be enough to give you pain

They hurt because there isn't a flat piece of road where I live, literally none until you get off the hill. Out my front door is up hill, out my back door is down hill. Not really pain anyway, its muscle tension as the muscles aren't used to working that hard. Once on easier parts they settle quickly down to normal. I am probably trying to hard in the wrong gears as well which probably exacerbates the problem. I tend to get out the saddle and push hard till I get a bit of speed up on all the little inclines instead of just changing down and building speed that way.

keep a good steady cadence throughout the climbs and its sometimes best to take a step back on the power to keep your heart rate down. the fact that your pushing on the climbs suggest you've got the interest and motivation to be doing the long rides, keep up the good work

Get on the a4067 towards pontardawe. Thats got to be flat enough for you. Good opportunity for a slipstream or 2 aswell if you dont mind the traffic.

Aye it is once I get there! As I live at the very top of Ystrad going out is fine, its comming back up thats the problem! ;) I wouldn't do the road, to many nutters but the bicycle track runs along there from Swansea harbour to, few places dog poo alley but I have walked it many times with the dogs.

I don't much like the A4067 at the Swansea end, but the B4603 that runs almost alongside as far as Ynysmeudwy is a very nice ride, and infinitely preferable to the cycle track if you're on road tyres.
