That happens to me all the time. Like you, I assume that if they're not indicating, they're going straight on. It's amazing how many people assume lorry drivers are psycic.

Psychotic, maybe...

I suppose it's comforting, in some ways to know that people are just as stupid around lorries as they are around bikes. I used to mutter at people who walked out in front of me "Would you do that if I was a bus?" Then I got a job that involved driving a converted (into a van) school bus and found that yes, they would...

TBH I get beeped all the time because of riding a recumbent. Most of the time it's someone wanting to say cool bike, or some less positive comment, so it's often hard to tell when someone is angry with their perception of my riding. Probably best ignored anyway!

A three oddities from some motorists in the passed few weeks I remember:

Turning right into a side road, signal move around the car, continue to signal for a short period once passed the parked car (I'm braking on wet leaves at this point in the middle of the opposing lane) & turn right. As soon as I start to turn guy hoots & shouts "signal you f**king moron". Erms, I did!

Pulling across a busy A road with a car refuge in the middle. No traffic to the left so pull across & stop as there are 3 cars approaching. The first 2 noticed me & checked but realised I was stopping/stopped so continue on their way. The 3rd does an emergency brake with a long blast of his horn, as creeps passed at about 15mph he glares at me.

Turning a right, right, left in the space of 20m. Signal right turn right, hold the signal & stay in the middle of the road, note a car is going to pass me on my left but it's okay I'm turning right again so pull up to the point I want to turn right. But it's not all right, I hear a horn from my left, this guy had decided to undertake me while I was turning right, I quickly do a U turn in the road to let the guy into the side road. Still mounts the curb & almost takes out a lamp post to get round the corner.

Re: signalling.
If you are unsure & may end up giving incorrect signals it's generally less confusing not to signal than give incorrect signals. However if you don't signal you must proceed with more caution as you're not giving other people full information.
