Thanks @Fab Foodie, the Paramo stuff does look good, but can be a bit heavy and doesn't pack down that small. Also I would much prefer a full-length zip.

I'm definitely interested in something with Gore Tex Active Shell fabric, I think, as it's light but has good waterproof protection, as well as being very breathable. I'm even considering the non-bike specific Mountain Equipment Firefox jacket, though the large non-removable or stow-able flapping hood (as described in this, otherwise very positive, review) might be an annoyance when cycling, though like the lack of a long tail. Am still also considering the Gore Bike Ware Fusion (has side pockets, but no hood, though I'm not keen on the strange toggle at the base of the tail) and the Gore Bike Ware ALP-X 2.0 Active which has a detachable hood, but no side pockets, though it look like both have fairly long tails. Are there any other good Gore Tex Active Shell jackets available?

The Chrome Storm Cobra Jacket also looks interesting, and nicely styled, though I've not seen many reviews for it, so am unsure how waterproof and breathable it is...

Hi,

I'm a reborn cyclist and I'm going to slowly (as finances dictate) build up my cycling kit. I do have a lot of mountain / hill walking gear, so some of this will have to suffice until I can afford new gear.
I've owned many waterproofs over the years and have most certainly fell out of love with Gore products. I recently got a refund for a really expensive Pro Shell jacket that leaked badly almost from the word go.
The waterproof I'm using for biking until I can afford a more suitable alternative is a Mountain Hardwear Jacket. It is a super light mountaineering jacket made from Conduit fabric. Obviously it's not perfect but as far as waterproofing and breath-ability go, it's outstanding.
I'm not sure if any cycle jackets are made of Conduit but if there are, I'll certainly be heading in that direction when I am able. as someone else said, Event is another good fabric and Paramo are excellent but heavy.
