Don’t ask me why, but I’ve always hankered after a gold tooth or two.

I have an appointment with my dentist in a few weeks, when I suspect I will be told I need a crown (which is breaking up) replacing.

Poll. Other opinions welcome.

As my dentist told me when he installed my crowns, if I'm ever in financial difficulty I have precious metals in my mouth. Gold crowns will increase their sale value further.

Yeah but...I assume they’re made of 9 carat gold, which has a scrap value of about £11/gram. Guesstimated weight of a crown is 9 or 10 grams. Additional cost of a gold crown over a white crown is about £400.

The maths doesn’t work.

Aren't you a bit young to have crowned teeth. I thought young uns who actually look after their teeth have better gnashers than those of us who were kids in the olden days (i.e. The 70s and 80s)

I've got 3 crowns, 2 white ones and one gold. The gold one is at the back.
I dont think I'd have a gold tooth at the front though, its a bit of a dated look now.Mine was about £50.00 on the NHS.

I asked my dentist what the cost was the last time I had a crown (about a year ago). I forget the exact numbers, but approx. £200 for a white crown and £600 for a gold crown. Both prices on the NHS.

I had the choice between Mercury or white fillings a while back, went for Mercury as they are harder wearing and last longer.

Suppose it depends which is the best material as a tooth substitute rather than what it looks like?.

I've had a big Mercury filling in for 26 years now and it's as good as the day it was fitted.

Not tempting fate but 2 of my mercury amalgam fillings have fallen out in the last year, when I asked the dentist about it he said they have a life of about 30 years, which fits in about right between fitting and falling out!

I've got a gold crown - it was cheaper than a white one*. It's near the back so it doesn't show.

* this seems to be opposite to other folks' experience above, no idea why!

The price is about the same from my experience. I think the gold ones have some kind of engineering advantage which I didn't quite follow. Strangely, when I was recently at the dentist he commented that one of my existing crowns "is a gold one for some reason". "well you fitted it" was my reply and he quickly changed the subject.

I used to have a gold crown (left front tooth), after an accident roller skating at about 10. Over the years it came out and had to be replaced about 4 times with a post. Eventually there wasn't enough to repair so was taken out and I have a false tooth. So from first crown to false tooth was about 50 years. All the way through secondary school and Uni I had tooth that had white veneer which chipped to reveal gold at the edge so not real gold tooth. I never got anything back when it was eventually removed for standard white crown.
I also have gold crown at the back and possibly need some caps or crowns from loss of old fillings.

I've got a big silver crown, it was fitted to a pretty dodgy tooth with no guarantees that it would last (salvage job) so I didn't want to stump up £400-500 for a white one. It was around £200, that was on the NHS at least 5 years ago. It's at the back, so it's not such an issue that it's quite ugly

Having recently had the similarly dodgy tooth next to it removed, if it deteriorates, I'll probably have to go the implant route as long as I'm reassured that it's risk free (i.e. no chance of bone infection as can happen apparently)

I voted cool because I have a gold tooth. At the back though. Why he or she put in a gold one I have no idea but it's been in well over 20 years.

Dental yellow gold has a special formulation so that it can be melted and cast accurately into a crown. This makes it expensive, not forgetting the cost of actually making it. They are used because of how long they last. 14.7 years on average rings a bell.
