Firstly, thanks for all your help in choosing a bike, and encouraging me that winter riding will be OK!

I've managed to get out on my bike every day since I bought it last Saturday.

First day I just reminded myself how to stay on a bike! The next two days I managed 3.5 miles, then 4.3 miles the next two days and today just over 5.1 miles. I am not going particularly fast: about 10 miles an hour, today's ride took just over half an hour. I am doing all this in the dark after work; not heavy traffic, but a fair amount of traffic.

My legs barely support me when I finally get off the bike, and I am quite sore where I sit! I hope this gets better, but it's not putting me off: I get out on my bike as soon as I get home from work.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Well done. Believe me it will get better.

Fast and careful!
Your back side will stop paining on rides quickly but padded shorts always dull that and legs get stronger as you slowly progress your miles,on my commute I do know I remember getting taken by a old chap on a bone shaker, I do the scalping now,

Keep at it, it does get easier, honest...
No, don't listen to them! It doesn't get easier, you just get faster, and for some odd reason continue to push yourself just as hard . Glad it's working out for you. I enjoy the feeling in my legs that a good bike ride gives me. I remember trying the 45° leg press at a gym a few years back, using legs hardened from many years cycling, and I was surprised by how much my legs could push.

Just keep extending those rides, little bit by little bit. I think 10 miles per hour in the darkness after work is doing just fine for now, daytime will, of course, be a bit faster. You are showing some real dedication. I know when I got started I was cycling whenever I could . Pace yourself, get good nutrition and advice, and be considerate of the non-cyclists in your life.

All you need to focus on at the moment is enjoying the rides. That saddle soreness will soon be a distant memory and before you know it spring will be here and all that winter cycling will have you eating up big miles for fun.

Well done!!
The first couple of weeks are the worst (well, until you start going further!).
I was surprised at how strong my leg muscles were still were after 6 years of not biking and they haven't given me any issues.
I started in October so I can't wait until the better weather!
It's gonna be a blast! Enjoy!

Thanks all.

I have some padded shorts on order. I think I also need a seat adjustment, on the 5 mile rides I have started to go numb where I would rather not go numb!
