In the days of real chamois leather, common advice was to use underwear when touring so that you could wash the underwear daily. These days it's generally easy to take one spare pair and wash each day. But sometimes compromises are necessary.

You can still go commando with normal shorts if you want to

Those are my normal apparel when not cycling. One has to keep ones modesty intact

Every 3 or 4 years, whether they need it or not.

Their inter-washing lifespan can be extended with judicious use of a blowtprch to dry put any moistness, and a wallpaper scraper and to remove the worst of the residue. The rest eill crumble and flake away over time
