There is an opinion that kidney stones are the nearest a man will ever come to experiencing childbirth

I am pretty certain that I passed a kidney stone about 40 years ago. I had agonising abdominal pain, a fever, and peed blood the next morning. In my usual fashion, I didn't bother with a doctor at the time ... I nearly bit through the piece of timber that I was biting to stop myself screaming and frightening everybody in the house.

I had several CT scans at the time of my blood clots a couple of years ago. Doctors looking at one of the scans spotted something in one kidney. They called me back in for a proper scan of the kidneys and did find calcified objects in there but concluded that they were stable and probably dated back a long time.

Many years ago (showing my age)

We had a patient with a renal calculi

Urologist turned to radiologist and said " I wish we had one of those new machines that could break these up in situ"

Radiologist walked off and came back with a hammer and chisel.... "That should do it..."

I'm carrying one st the minute (KS) but there's nothing new about that. The urologist wanted to go in and laser it but I've opted for the wait until it gets a bit better and go for the lithotripsy and hope it doesn't play up in the mean time. I've been told to drink 3 Ltrs of water a day. I've only ever passed on and had three lazered internally.

About 4:00 yesterday I became pain free, properly. I've not found stone in seive. Dad says they can be about the size of a grain of sand so I may have missed it. I feel OK today but I'm going to increase my water intake throughout the day. Thanks for all the good wishes. I hope I son get another. Dad says myntwo uncles and one aunt only ever got the one stone. His otherbvsister never had any. I never heard of my Nan and Granddad having one. I'll have to ask Dad.

I think you could still have it, it's unusual to pass a stone without feeling it. My pain comes and goes. Anyway good luck with it and keep drinking plenty forever.

Mine is back again. Lying in bed at mo with pain at about 50% what it was on Saturday waiting to phone up work. I think tablets have taken the edge off it. My Dad has had loads.over the years but his started when he was in his 40's. I'm nearly.60 so maybe I've been lucky to avoid them till now.

Another aside

At the base of the bladder is a small sensitive triangular area

If you have a stone (or stones) that pass into or form inteh bladder, then they bounce on this and cause pain and discomfort

It is though that "Hanging" Judge Jefferies suffered from this and by the time he had traveled by coach (unsuspended) from his lodgings in Dorchester to the assizes he was in pain and a foul mood, and many of the Monmouth supporters who were hung were victims of his bladder and the ensuing short temper
