For a bet, I once dived into Lake Windermere. In February. That was cold
I've done similar. The shock of it is brutal - like being kicked in the chest, and wondering if you'll ever be able to inhale again.

I've done Windermere in August - October, with a full body wet suit; and the initial entry is FREEZING. But it does warm up nicely :cuppa:

You'll certainly never catch me swimming in our local water at Cleethorpes...Think I'd rather drunk my head in the toilet bowl then in that water....Toilet would be cleaner and safer. xx(

I was in my underpants and a t-shirt. Somewhere there's a (amazingly well-timed by my mate) photo of me in mid air just before I hit the water. I was only in there for milliseconds, I should add! I didn't swim about, just got straight back out again.

Just to add some sanity to this thread. Swimming in cold water is exteremely dangerous, and that bloke is lucky to be alive! He could have drowned or had a heart attack, he doesnt exactly look to be in fine health!

Very true, especially when ice is involved.
If you go under fully like the person in the video, when the cold hits you it is very easy to begin to panic. As the hole is then unlikely to be directly above you, it is easy for you to panic further (because you can't find your way out, despite it probably being within arms reach), which in turn puts you in greater danger.

Swimming in cold water is extremely dangerous when not done correctly. When done with the correct approach it can be a safe and fun activity.
