Help me! Went out today at 2 degrees for a couple of hours. Body fine. Feet cold but not worryingly so. Hands? So frozen I nearly cried from the pain as the blood crept back into them once I got home.

I have some Altura shield gloves which were well reviewed but didn't even start to keep my hands warm. What should I buy?

My warmest gloves are Spesh Radiant but there are a bit too bulky for the road bike but perfect for commuting. They've also got a pocket for a hand warming gel but I've never used it they're plenty warm already.
My little sister has also got me a pair of thin silk gloves to wear underneath I may give them a go but I'll probably be too warm then.

I wear ski type gloves. It's usually about minus 2 in the evenings and this works all right. I had problems on one of the fairly cold nights in the first couple of weeks of december when it was minus 7 or something. I think it's important to cover the wrists from wind as that is where heat will seap out.

I don't have problems changing gears no, I can also press the cycle function on the speedo (ish). I can't grip small things too well, so there are big limitations. I suppose it depends on time, I was out last night from 9pm for about an hour and a half, I can definitely see problems creeping up when you're out for longer than that like I had at the beginning of last month. Anyway just my 2p worth, I don't do anything properly .

I used to wear two pairs, one pair of lightweight gloves under my big thick winter gloves. Even then, when it was really cold I used to suffer as you describe (including the "nearly - in - tears" bit!). Winter cycling is sometimes uncomfortable, no matter how good your kit is.

Gore gloves have windstopper material, but I'm not sure if they would be warm enough (I use Gore Lady Vulcano, but it's about 5 degrees warmer where I live). The Gore Xenon and Gore Alp X look very good.

If you have room in your gloves you could use a glove liner (sealskinz do one on Wiggle).

Alternatively you could always try wearing a bigger pair of gloves over the top?

(Ah, already suggested I see!).

I bought some Altura liner gloves to put inside my windproof ones, and they helped a lot. I seem to remember they were about £6 from Evans. Hands still not toasty on really cold days - cold, but not painfully so.

Get some silk liners. They're thin enough that they'll fit under any glove and make a big difference. Under a tenner from most outdoors shops or £5 from Decathlon

Thanks - i'll try silk and maybe my ski gloves too. I'm not a big woos (didn't cry at all when i broke my leg) but those frozen fingers nearly beat me today!

I've never known anything quite so painful. It really is enough to make you cry, even a big hairy truck driver like me!
