What does "logistical problems (motos)" mean? Is it too steep for them?
More than likely...can't be sure where I saw it but the road surface looked a bit ropey too.Would of been a good time to have drones filming ? There again I think the motos would have been mechanical support, not sure we're ready for a drone doing a wheel change.

Yes, that inrng tweet that you quoted above said that. So it could be anything. Maybe they can't get enough qualified motorbike drivers. Maybe the drivers have taken one look at it and said "Sod that for a game of soldatos".

Little wheel changing robots parachuting from drones. Smart wheels that change themselves. You know it makes sense.

Is it too steep for motos to go as slow as the cyclists with no waiting places or alternative routes? The giro has had neutral service crash on steep slopes several times before. UCI may be right to be less optimistic than the race director, based on past evidence.

Couldn't people stand every X metres along the route with spare wheels, like on some gravel or cobble sections?

All good points. I'm glad they thought about this well in advance and didn't leave it until the last minute. ;)

may also be an issue of going very slow behind a rider, with an inexperienced lunatic of a mechanic riding pillion carrying 2 wheels and a spare bike.

with refernce to that tweet, isnt Zoncolan just as steep? might be a better surface though, give its more famous

Now PLEASE NOTE I know this is pure fantasy land right here right now, BUT:
I think drone DELIVERY of a spare wheel would be highly feasible. Riders can swap wheels themselves (and the crap ones will soon learn to do it better!) Neutral drones would work best (to keep numbers/traffic down).

The alternative - and a highly attractive one - is to ban assistance on certain sections. Riders would just have to ride Marathon+, and wear shoes with recessed cleats

The linked article is Dutch but good ole Google Translate provides some enlightenment and entertainment.

The main topic of discussion on Friday morning at the regular meeting with all team leaders one day before the start of the Giro: the climbing time trial on the penultimate day on Monte Lussari. It's a whooping thing that three-quarters of the peloton is already doing in their pants for.

And this may explain the real logistical issues. It seems it's all about getting down, not going up.

After the finish, the riders can be brought down with a ski lift, but that does not apply to the motorcycles. To give all those bikes and mechanics time to return to the foot of the mountain, the time trial will be divided into three waves, each with a considerable break. This also gives the support vehicles enough opportunity to return to the start. A team can get into trouble if it has, say, five or six riders close together in the classification - and therefore in the same wave. In that case, it actually does not have enough staff to put someone behind each rider in the support car and on the motorcycle. The time limit would be increased so that riders do not finish out of time in one day before the final stage in Rome due to bad luck and poor assistance.

I predict: Geraint Thomas will fall off the ski lift.
