not been on here for a while following a lay off due to illness, had part of my bowel removed early December and finally I'm back to normal lol

So to my question - I have a giant defy composite 1 2014 which I really like, having recently got a job in barrow i feel I need something a bit sturdier to handle the rougher tracks around the area (man logic yes ok but I like new bikes too!)

I fancy the giant toughroad but there's something I can't get to the bottom of

Giants web site shows the slr 2 available in xl but the slr 1 only up to L?

It's odd because the size charts for the slr2 only go up to large. I've contacted a couple of agents and so far no conclusive answers, one seems to think that if the slr2 is shown as xl then it's available.

Trouble is according to Giants size guide a large should be big enough (I'm 6'2" with 34" inside leg) however the large size toughroad is smaller than my XL defy and I'm confident part of the reason I like my defy so much is because of the room - I'm a large build at 17stone so not too comfy squashed up on the drops.

Any thoughts? Am I being to pedantic? Would The larger would be fine as there's only a small difference?

Just thought maybe someone has actual experience / knowledge of the toughroad so may actually know why the slr 1 only seems to run up to large ? Or maybe the 2 isn't even available in xl?

Why not contact a giant concept store? There are a few around the country

Have you checked the US site too?

Ta for reply

Just checked giant USA and they show they slr1 in XL

I wonder if it's therefore just the uk that doesn't get the xl?

I will contact a concept store tomorrow though and see if they can advise

You can get an xl in the slr1 down under

But in Ireland apparently not!

Hopefully it's a web site mistake rathe than giant not doing the 1 in xl in the uk? Doesn't seem to make sense when they do sell the 2 in xl in the uk

Bought one - after speaking to two giant retailers who both didn't really know I rang Rutland cycles

The chap I spoke to was very helpful and gave me some good advice which showed he had taken the time to understand what he was talking about - no big deal ok but not what I had experienced so far

He then offered to ring giant and find out exactly, after an hour or two he rang back and confirmed:-

Whilst giant make the slr 1 in xl they do no sell it in the uk (possibly will next year)

So I've ordered the SLR1 in XL from Rutland cycles

Big thanks to Carl for being helpful, that's why I bought the bike from that particular shop

I'll update when I get it and have ridden it which may be a Cple of weeks due to work etc

Sounds like you have done your research :okay:

I had a look at the geometries of both bikes (basing this on the L size as Giant don't appear to publish the geometry of the XL Toughroad). The top tube length is identical. The Toughroad has a flat handlebar so you could even have expected it to have a slightly longer top tube to compensate for the shortened reach you get on a flat-bar bike. But it doesn't appear to be the case so expect quite an upright ride compared to the Defy.

Head tube length is a bit shorter on the Defy but this is predictable because it's a road bike and the Toughroad is going to be more upright for general cavorting about.

The seat angle on the Defy is mildly shallower so that would put you a touch further back/flatter on the bike to extend the reach.

In short, I can't see why you would have worked on the L size so hopefully you will enjoy the XL.

Mind you, I also visited Rutland's website and was unable to buy an XL Toughroad in either the SLR1 or SLR2 models, so did you bag the last one?

Ditto :okay:

I did do a similar comparison on dimensions and as you say comparing a large to a large they are very similar. It's very likely then that the relationship extrapolates out to the xl models. Of course the toughroad will be a more sit up position but that's fine and kinda what I was looking for.

I've recently started working in barrow and rent a house on Walney island, there looks to be quite a lot of trails and coastal paths so the toughroad is to take advantage of that kind of terrain whilst still being good for a faster run up a cycle path/road.

Nope I didn't bag the last one, at least not from Rutland because they didn't have an xl in stock and had ordered it from giant uk. The chap I spoke to was Carl whom I'd ask for if you end up giving them a call, oh and buy the way I also got 10% store credit against the new bike so don't forget to ask for that before doing the deal

What's the bike like? I like the look of this a lot.

@Shansky - nice bike plus the coastal road down the island is lovely on a fine day (pretty awful on a not so fine day when it blows a bit). Some cars travel a bit rapidly down there. Some fine cycling territory around there and not too hilly compared to further North.
