Given its name it looks like it was only discovered this year so no chance of being able to do anything about it if it was going to impact. Nice of them to wait until after it passed by before letting people know.

if the diameter of the earth is about 8000 miles, then 44,000 miles is only about five times that diameter. Or have I got that wrong? If I'm right that does seem very close.

Most of them aren't spotted, the one five years ago is completely typical, LINEAR reckoned that it happens about that size and closeness about every 2 years, just nobody notices them.

I thought they would have seen it coming but this sounds like it would have been a lastminute.com effort to get Bruce Willis scrambled in an effort to save the world! Good job it wasn't on target, heh ;)

I thought this was something to do with the new space station breaking up but it's just a near miss with a giant lump of rock with the potential to kill a few million people. I'm disappointed now.
