As long as the headset is kept clean and greased the integrated headsets will last as long as the frame -although I suppose in off-road bikes which get a bit more punishment in this area it could be an issue.
I keep my bike very well maintained, but I just think that's basically poor engineering.

Ok first of all sorry to raise this again but I just want to be sure of something so I hopefully don't break anything too badly at the weekend.

Currently if I take the top cap off and the take the stem off (leaning handlebars across two chairs) the forks don't move when I lift the frame. Am I correct in thinking that the wheel and the forks should just drop out and therefore something on my bike has seized?

I think it's the spacers as these won't shift at all so I'm going to liberally WD40 them and then get one of those grip things on them.

TIA

Doubtful that they'd just drop out - last time I did mine, once I had taken the stem\bars off it needed a healthy downwards whack on the top of the steerer tube with a rubber mallet to start them moving out of the frame. Once they were freed off, they were easy to slide out.

Thanks very much for the info. I'll give it a go and hope I don't break anything!!

Does anyone know anything about Giant headsets? The one on my Giant SCR is rocking ever so slightly, I asked Evans to have a look at it whilst they were building a new front wheel for me. They said they've had a look and that its ok. They also said that Giant use internal headsets (???). Aren't all headsets internal? Is there something different about a Giant one?

Might take it to my LBS once I have some time off work.

I know this is a bit late but for those stiill needing an answer as I did recently; An FSA No.11 will fit a Giant SCR frame with recess in head tube of 41.5mm diameter. I searched for weeks on evrything going to get some info even the comments on this thread which are generally useless, a lot of it I guess from people who have never had to replace one on a Giant. There is just abysmal info on the Giant site and even a friendly Giant rep' couldn't get me the answer. These headsets retail at Chainreaction for £6 odd at the moment.

The thread wasn't about replacing a Giant Headset but tightening one up (slightly complicated by the compression ring being a bit tight and the forks therefore not falling straight out).

May I suggest that you ask if you have a specific query - that's what this part of the forum is for - and be a bit more civil to contributors.

Ooh, that could be very useful information, given that the headset on my Giant SCR is on its way out having not had enough TLC and too much abuse...
