I am about to buy my first proper road bike, and need to know what frame size to get. I'm looking at a Giant TCR and am 5'6. Their site suggests a Small or a Medium both are acceptable for my size? Which should I get?

For me on a defy 2 it suggested a medium or large I'm 5'11 I know the current trend is for just a few sizes and use longer seat posts but I'd rather go for the larger size than look too big on a small bike so my two-penneth would be go for the medium. I went for the large and its spot on... but spending that kind of cash I'd want to sit on one first to be sure

Yeah definitely try outs!

My gut feeling would be a small because the tcr is a racing bike so it's a longish position, depends how flexible you are though.

I'm 5 11 and ride a med large defy, but they are shorter on the ride position anyway.

I've decided to order a medium, from a local bike shop and see how it goes, they did suggest a small but, after trying a small TCR I think there isn't much difference tbh, thanks guys

I'm 5'8" and had a bike fit esp for the Defy...."S" was the size i needed..I rode both the medium and small and felt that the former was too long and i was a little stretched..Trouble is though that we are all different shapes and sizes so really try before you buy...I recently bought a Whyte hybrid(malvern) ..After visiting two bike shops both suggested a medium frame,(Just by looking at me and asking my height)..After a bit of research and a test ride i picked the small size which is a perfect fit..Its also the size Whyte recommend for someone my height...

I once owned a Defy in size Large (6ft 1/2") bought 2nd hand with no experience of modern road bikes.

I had this for a year but found it too big, with seat post dropped in too low.

I prefer plenty of seat post showing & my legs are short-ish for my height & torso is long.

A M/L size wasn't available back then but would be perfect for me now.

Can always shorten the stem and get narrower bars and even cranks

However, I would always go smaller with a longer stem than larger if in between (after a too big bike gave me tennis elbow which required surgery, well indeed 2 operations  )

Hope the medium works out, if the small felt too small on test ride, then it's likely fine

yeah It's coming in on Saturday so, I'll be able to get it fitted and test it out, hopefully it'll be great, I have quite a long torso so it should be a good size
