They do need adjustment. But only to dial in as the pads wear. And seeing as the pads last a good year of all weather commuting, it's not very often and certainly no hassle.
Fair enough. Mine were Tektro Novelas and they were crap. I've never tried BB7.

I am starting to think you dont like black for bikes

Here for rides.
For me, and others will disagree, rim is best of that choice. Cable discs are not worth the hassle. Discs are only worth it when hydraulic, or at least the calliper is hydraulic. Else you end up adjusting them all the time. At least, that's been my experience.
Nope, not my experience. Once set up properly adjustment is an occasional, and easy, task.

As to the OP. Discs.

so you just lumped cable discs into one category and stated they were all rubbish....nice

maybe you should experience other things before giving a reccomendation based on the usage of 1 item

I have three bikes with hydro discs, and they are all excellent maintenance free brakes, if that helps. The Novelas were fiddly and needy when they worked, and then they failed altogether when the bearings wore through and skipped out of their ramp races. It seemed to me that the bearing/ramp mechanism, at least in the Novelas, was fundamentally flawed.

How many and which cable brake systems have you owned? And that's not a smart-ass question.

I see your point. I thought I'd qualified my initial remarks sufficiently, but I realised after I'd posted that I hadn't.

I am going to go to my LBS on Saturday to order my new road bike
The money I have to spend it will be a Giant Defy
But do I get a Defy with Disc Brakes or Rim?
They are both the same price however the group set on Rim is Ultegra and disc is 105
What should I go for?

Thanks
Go for the Ultegra group set .

Nowadays, I would go for disc brakes. Where I live is a tadge hilly and I'm not sure that I feel amazingly safe going down 20%ers on my roadie. I take my CX with it's 105s and Disc Brakes a lot more often than the roadie

I currently 3 bikes with disc brakes all running trp spyres......ive also ran 29ers with hydraulics

The spyres are simple to set-up and have been running on my bikes for at least 6 months with no fiddly adjustment required as yet. But when they do its just a simple little turn with a 3mm allen key each side to move the pistons inwards towards the discs as pads wear.

Hope this answers your question sufficiently
