  1. I'd want a lower gear - 12-30 sounds like a good idea
  2. Practice on easier hills for a bit
  3. After a while, as you get fitter, the pain of climbing becomes weirdly enjoyable (for some people)
  4. Build a mental palace of endurable pain and torture in your head and go there when climbing a steep hill
  5. Don't stop unless your legs fail
  6. If its all too much pain and hassle just forget about the whole thing and just enjoy riding your bike

Are you doing this , this year http://big-g-sportive.co.uk/ same hills your playing with ...

https://www.sportsentrysolutions.co.uk/race_page.php?recordID=340 just under a 100 places left ...

Be good for goal setting ; helps keep (me) motivated,

I spin as others, from the bottom in lowest gear (try) sit back & remember to breathe

Hope you had a good ride

Nope i'm not doing that! though I might have a look at signing up in a couple of weeks if they'res any places left!

Razzle you old dog! Saw your ride. ;)
Proper pacing is helping me to no end! I cannot rate it highly enough.

I did slow down in the middle of my ride, but then managed to get back up to pace

I read in a book about racing to split the hill into thirds.
Go into the first third slightly under geared so you are properly spinning, then as the hill ramps up you sort of settle into it. Once this has happened start to wind it up through the second third and then give it the beans to just after the summit in the last third.

I've used it on smaller hills and like it, although it made me puke the other week.

For bigger hills, I just find a gear that works, start spinning and try and keep a regular rhythm. Maybe when I'm better at it you can split those into thirds, dunno xx(

I now always go in over geared because, as the hill gods would have it, its actually faster, not slowing down half way up dramatically as your legs start screaming
