Hi, I am new to cycling and have just acquired a mountain bike through the ride to work scheme (fantastic opportunity if you can get it!)
My ride to work is only half a mile but I didn't want it for riding to work.... I wanted my bike just to ride for fun!

I got a mountain bike, not sure I have done the right thing, I may have been better with a hybrid but I have it now.... The tyres on road bikes scare the life out of me so a road bike was out of the question!! (for the moment!!)

I used to be a runner and used a Garmin forerunner 410 to track my runs, but as many of you know, it can be used for cycling which is brilliant! I have tracked my rides that I have done so far and here is my progress:

13/07/14 ...6 miles average speed 8.5
23/07/14 ...6 miles average speed 9.0
27/07/14 ...10 miles average speed 8.9
30/07/14 ...12 miles average speed 9.2
03/08/14 ...15 miles average speed 10.0
09/08/14 ... 20 miles average speed of 11.4

As you can see, my distance and speed are steadily increasing! I am not bothered about the speed but that is coming along all by it's self!!

So, on-wards and up-wards!

:welcome: to CC! Don't be scared of road bike tyres, they are easy peasy to ride on and the make you go faster!! Seriously though I only ever used to ride mountain bikes and I was scared of the skinny tyres but I don't even think about it now!! Anyway enjoy your new bike and happy cycling!^_^

Thank you Bryony! In the past I had a bike and came off it on black ice, I only rode it for a month or two (hence me being new to cycling now) We also came off our motorbike years ago because the wheel just went from under us going around a corner (no, we were not going fast, it was in the center of a town) so now, cornering and the thought of tiny tyres does scare me.... Anyway, never say never eh! lol. We'll see! I have a year to go before I can even think about buying a second one now! ;)

I used to be nervous of skinny road tyres, especially when I got rid of my BSO and bought a Defy. The roadie took a week or so to get used to but I adore it. As for the black ice issue, a hybrid or a MTB will slide just as badly on it. Not a worry at this time of year though.

Once you have a bit more confidence, you could cycle to work, I know you said it was only half a mile, but you could go the longer way around if possible:smile:

Like @Supersuperleeds does.

Thank you everyone! I will give it serous consideration over the next year! Is it worth me putting road tyres on the bike I have now? I have looked at the tyres online and am totally baffled!! On my tyre I have now it says: 52-559 (26x2.1) Can anyone tell me what would be best to get?

Welcome Moe!
You will certainly feel the difference on the 30 miler after fitting the jets.
Did same change as you a few years back, scared myself by going too fast
