getting caught in the rain

I once read somewhere [not long ago too] that you will get caught in the rain while out cycling one in eight times. Well going back the last three weeks i must have been cycling home in the rain every day three weeks ago every other day two weeks ago and this week once so far.
I use my bike 5 days a week twice a day minimum in winter and more in summer due to days out with family.
I think from my experience this theory is blown out of the water

Depends what you call 'rain' I suppose.

If you count the number of times I've been out in a light drizzle, barely enough to moisten your jacket, well maybe your figures are correct. If you mean a tropical downpour, the sort of thing no waterproof on Earth can keep out, the sort where the first thing you do on arrival is strip, dive in the shower and then a complete change of clothing - well that's actually quite rare.

I'm classing everything from light drizzle to light to moderate rain.

Upside down. I'm not saying it has rained every day non stop but where i live and i have been going or coming home from work it has maybe started to rain or i have been caught in a shower. I'm sure three weeks ago i was getting in from work and my water proofs were wet from drizzle or rain. Thinking back two weeks ago it was 3 times that week and this week just the once. But i think that should be it now for me till ohh lets say July time

I read the same or a similar thing a while ago, and it said that they were only counting a decent amount of rain, not when it's only spitting.

The stat often quoted is 12 times a year.

It sounds about right as it never rains as much as people think and when it does, it doesn't necessarily rain at the time that you cycle commute.

Though, sometimes you might get 6 of these wet commutes altogether and then nothing for months.

I must have had more than 18 rainy commutes this year (I can think of 15 since the start of October) but on the other hand it was dry almost entirely from Easter to September round here so it's swings and roundabouts.

+1 with Ianrauk, actually rains much less than i though...I seem to remember him mentioniong this a while ag and it got me thinking about it.

Its nearly always damp in winter...and muddy, but not much actual rain

The stat that I read was only counting actual commuting too, so it assumed that you would ride twice per day, at roughly the same time of day. Which is weird because I do find that riding to work I don't often get wet, but riding somewhere fun I do.

Thats something i have never done ie take the car because it's raining. Lets face it you put your water proofs on and when you get to work your dry warm providing you have purchased decent breathable gear.

From my experience it is grossly optimistic.

I actually counted over a six month period from May to October 2007. I got rained on about 60 times in that period, and that is in Surrey and Sussex, far from the wettest parts of the country.

On rare occasions I have been rained on four times in one day.
