Getting bikes onto a roof mounted bike rack on an MPV ?

Well there are bicycle trailers but they seem to cost the same as a cheap full carbon road bike. There's the Kari-tek easy load roof rack but that's £500 plus cycle rack adapters and then you'd be lifting two bikes up at the same time which would be er fun

At 5'4" I struggle with this, even the light bikes! I take a plastic step with me in the boot whenever I go out alone. I have tried having the car door open and stepping on the sill but never feel secure on one leg with the nice bike over my head!

If alone why not just stick the bike in the boot? Unless it's a saloon with a very small one!

I would but my car has a dog guard and car seat for son fitted so its more of a faff to take all of that out and in again than it is to put the steps in the boot!

Isn't that a hatchback rather than a saloon. I'm pretty sure I used to get mine in a mini with seats down (normal BMW mini not one of those weird expanded ones)

When I had the roof bars on the Fusion, I used a fold-flat step stool about a foot or so high. I strapped the front wheel to the frame, and lifted the bike from the forks and seat stay. The step stool has a much larger step area than a step ladder, so is easier to stand on.

Pick up bike by fork and downtube, over head, lock arms, step up onto sill, lean against door with small of back, drop wheels roughly onto carrier, then push bike upright, hold with one arm, use other to manipulate carrier. Reverse to take off. If you need to you can put a cover on the seat and step on that too, unless you're a bit precious about cars.
I've a Meriva and this works for me. I did have to change my Thule Freerides though as the closure lever was too high to reach, and my bike did fall onto the (glass) roof once. I've now got Altera Grio carriers and it's super easy to load and unload
